Gleo

"Nothing"

PORTUGUESE VERSION

Who are we behind our masks?

When religion, science and morals are shaken and outside support threatens to collapse, man turns his eyes to himself. So says Kandinsky in his most famous work “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”. For him, the artist has the role of reflecting the hard picture of current times and being a point of light for the human soul, through his language: art. The artist is the one who is on duty to elucidate new paths; his task is to work on himself, to deepen his inner need, creating a spiritual atmosphere.

Arriving in March 2020, in Brazil, the artist Nathalia Gallego Sánchez, better known as Gleo, transformed what was a vacation into a seven-month artistic residency, amid the isolation of the world pandemic. The artist was confronted with her vulnerability, in a moment of detachment, of releasing fear, getting out of her comfort zone. Here, she presents the reflection of her meditative period of self-knowledge and healing. Gleo exposes a more intimate line, punctuating the renewal of her style that still undergoes an intuitive maturation process. The exhibition marks her transition phase, presenting two rooms that mark the artist from before and the artist who is under (de)construction.

The mastery of form is not her ultimate goal, but the structure from an internal, unconscious meaning. Gleo eliminates contours and completion and, by minimizing the shape, finds her maximum expression. The vibrant colors, the predominance of flowers, the artist as protagonist, do not deny: Gleo is still here. But it is different. Dreamlike, stained, diffuse, undefined. Nothing was the way in which the artist gave up all layers that were imposed or created by herself. In the epistemological origin, the word Nothing, from the Latin, comes from “born”, the one who is born with something since the beginning. The search for Nothing is the constant search for her, Cream, Nathalia.

According to Sartre, in the existentialism bible "Being and Nothingness", the human being is the portal from which Nothing comes into the world. Nothing is the engine of human consciousness, it is in Nothing that we are free to be who we want to be, within our knowledge of expansion. Nothing is the openness to what lies ahead in the field of infinite possibilities. Gleo invites us to be present and to trust in the plunge of emptiness to find the center of our own existence, in what is born to us, stripped of all our social masks and therefore, wide of abundant interpretations.

Así dice Kandinsky in his most famous work “About the Spiritual in the Art”.
